New York City: What I See

New York City...how can it really be defined?  What does its core population really stand for?  Even after just four days of living in New York, coming from a tremendously slower existence in middle Georgia, I have managed to form some strong opinions.  However, as I write this, I realize I am yet still on the outside of any real network of people--which, for obvious reasons, limits the substance of what I think.  For whatever reason, though, I feel like I have so much to express.

For starters, I'm in this coffee shop/bar joint called Sugar Burg, on the corner of Metropolitan and Union (which, by the way, happens to have an environment that's pretty inviting to an out-of-towner looking for a place to get a caramel latte and a piece of mind), and two guys come in and start conversing with the guy that works there.  What was peculiar about this conversation, however, was how most of it sounded like this indirect, sarcastic, inaccurate description of the person I am.  Now call me crazy or paranoid, but come on!  I can not only hear, but I'd like to say that I'm on a pretty decent level of comprehension.  Although I won't get specific about my thoughts of their conversation, I will say that people do many things for lots of different reasons...I just wish they would have a greater meaning for doing whatever they do when I'm around.

Additionally, I guess that could be the gist of what I'd really like to say (or ask) to New York--what is the meaning?  Although this perspective is one that derives from my mentality about people everywhere in America, I happen to be in the great city of New York for the very first time in my life, and I simply perceive NY to be the epitome of our nation.  Moreover, as I am remain on the surface of things in the city, my opinion is that NY seems to be just a container of individuals on auto-pilot, who are either perverting the use of technological mechanisms and devices, or allowing those mechanisms and devices to pervert them--but again, this perspective is one generated from a position on the surface and not within any inner sanctum of any kind.  We'll see how things unfold as I continue my trek.
